IMETU, the Institute of Microelectronics of Tsinghua University, was founded in September 1980 with the approval of the Ministry of Education of China. IMETU is located on the beautiful campus of Tsinghua University. The total floor space of IMETU's building is about 10,000 square meters. Supported by government, IMETU is the main member of Northern Microelectronics Research and Development Center of China. Its research focuses on micro-nano electronics IC processing and equipments and R&D of IC design. It has the most complete IC development and processing line compared to other universities in mainland China. Since 1988, the research and educational in IMETU has been recorgnized as the only institution for the key academic subject of "Microelectronic and Solid-State Electronics" in China, which was first time awarded by the State Council. It has been re-evaluated as one of the national key academic subject institution by the Ministry of Education in January 2001. IMETU is the institution for educating high-quality scientists and engineers in the field of microelectronics. New established Tsinghua university micro-and nano- electronic department undertake education work of the micro-electronics institute in 2004.
IMETU has advanced facilities for research and education, and first-class faculties. Since IMETU established in 1980, near thousand of graduates in bachelors level, and more 300 in Master of Science/Ph.D. degrees have been awarded. Over the past 20 years and more, it trained for Chinese society more than 1200 professionals in microelectronics at various levels. In recent years a system for comprehensive IC technology education and training has been established in IMETU. Education program for the multi-type degree and training for special skill in certain fields have been developed with great success.
